A large-format urban planning model was enhanced with mixed reality for the public developer Paris La Défense. The 3D interface needed to remain precisely aligned with the physical topography as users moved around it. The studio developed the mixed reality headset application featuring persistent spatial anchoring. Using a controller, visitors point at buildings to trigger real-time slideshows and videos. A single-point initialization ensures the stability of the virtual overlays all around the model.

Success relied on impeccable readability and drift-free optical alignment. The user needed to be able to move around the display table without losing visual synchronization. It was also necessary to make viewing videos, slideshows, and data seamless within the headset, without overwhelming the eye or obscuring the physical volumes.

The approach

We developed the real-time application for mixed reality headsets. The system uses a persistent spatial anchor tied to a single initialization point. This process maintains the exact alignment of the 3D volumes while the user walks all the way around the model. Using a controller, the visitor points to areas of the district to trigger animations synchronized with the table's reliefs. We programmed a smooth 3D heads-up interface to control the playback of videos and slideshows without breaking immersion.
