A standalone headset syncs scents to 360 video
A virtual reality experience synchronises scent release with zero latency on a standalone headset.

The project
Guerlain deployed a virtual reality experience combining a 360° video with synchronized scent diffusion. The installation had to operate without handheld controllers while maintaining a stable wireless connection to the diffuser. The studio developed a gaze-based interface connected via Bluetooth to two scent nozzles. The two fragrances are triggered with second-by-second precision, eliminating any perceptible latency for the user. An automatic reconnection feature instantly restores the device as soon as the headset wakes from sleep mode.

The challenge
An event's audience should not struggle with controllers or complex menus. The entire challenge was to make the wireless connection between a standalone headset and a scent diffuser reliable, without stream interruptions or latency, to ensure immediate immersion from the very first second.
The approach
We designed this virtual reality creation in Unity, centered around a 360° experience. At the home screen, the user launches the session by staring at the start button for 3 seconds, controller-free. The system controls a connected olfactory box via Bluetooth Low Energy, equipped with automatic reconnection. During the video, the box releases two fragrances calibrated for 7-second diffusions timed down to the exact frame. 3DOF tracking and a 180-degree mask ensure visual comfort.
