360° Scent Device Under Hardware Constraint
VR application precisely managing fragrance diffusion timings and BLE connection on a standalone headset.
The challenge
A partner agency commissioned our team to finalize this application intended for Guerlain. The major technical challenge is to ensure reliable Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) communication with the olfactory hardware and to provide intuitive VR ergonomics.
Our approach
Creation of the VR application with video playback management (play, pause, resume) and view restriction (deactivation of 6DOF, 180° black mask). Precise integration and configuration of the Olfy box to trigger the scent nozzles (Nérolie plein sud, Herbe troublante) with specific frequencies and timings. Implementation of a gaze-controlled user interface (gaze control) and management of hardware connection errors.
The project
An immersive virtual reality application was developed for Guerlain to provide a multisensory experience on the standalone Vive Focus headset. The system immerses the user in a 360° video synchronized with a connected Olfy device, controlled via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), to precisely diffuse the "Nérolie plein sud" and "Herbe troublante" fragrances. The user interface, designed in Unity, incorporates gaze-based navigation, enabling the experience to be launched completely autonomously. The team delivered a stable APK that finely manages olfactory diffusion timings, including frequency and intensity, while handling the hardware constraints related to the device's connection.
